Tbilisi and the Caucasus mountains: a private 5-day short break

Four nights in one Tbilisi hotel, a private vehicle for your party, one day on the Georgian Military Road, and Friday planned in the city for Jumu’ah at Juma Mosque whenever your flights allow.

When it runs
All year. November to mid-April: Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) depends on the Jvari (Cross) Pass being open on the day; December to March the day is planned to Gudauri.

Highlights

  • One hotel in Tbilisi for all 4 nights, with a private vehicle and a local driver reserved for your party.
  • Old Tbilisi on foot and by cable car: Rike Park, the ridge beside Narikala Fortress and the sulphur bath quarter of Abanotubani.
  • Friday stays in Tbilisi: we set the order of the days so that you can attend Jumu’ah at Juma Mosque in the old town. If Friday is your arrival or departure day, this depends on your flight times.
  • A full day on the Georgian Military Road: Ananuri Fortress on the Zhinvali reservoir, Gudauri at about 2,200 m and, when the pass is open, Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) with a local 4x4 up to Gergeti Trinity Church.
  • Mtskheta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in the morning; in the afternoon a private family room at the sulphur baths, or Mtatsminda Park by funicular for the children.
  • Before you travel: the halal restaurants we have listed for each day, with the source of each listing, the prayer times for your dates and a one-page entry checklist.

Who it suits

Families and small private groups travelling from the UAE, citizens and residents alike, who have four or five days: Eid Al Etihad (National Day), the school mid-term break, Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha (expected in mid-May in 2027, when the mountain resorts are between seasons: no lifts and few places open). One hotel for the whole stay keeps packing to a minimum for children and grandparents. Day 3 is a long day on the road and climbs above 2,200 m, with the pass beyond Gudauri higher still, so please tell us in advance if anyone in your party has a heart or lung condition. Residents who hold another passport should read the entry conditions below before booking flights.

Season notes

Read this note in fullHide the details

Tbilisi and Mtskheta run in every month of the year. From November to mid-April the road beyond Gudauri, over the Jvari (Cross) Pass to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), can be closed at short notice because of avalanche risk, so that section depends on the pass being open on the day. From December to March the day is planned as far as Gudauri; if the pass is open, you choose on the day between longer snow time at Gudauri and continuing to Stepantsminda. We do not do both, because the mountain road is driven in daylight only. From November to February the full day to Stepantsminda leaves Tbilisi by 08:00, keeps the Gudauri lunch stop to one hour and starts back from Stepantsminda no later than 14:30. The Gudauri lifts run in two seasons set by the operator, Mountain Trails Agency: the 2026 summer season began on 18 July and the 2025–26 snow season ran from 27 December to 19 April, while dates for 2026–27 had not been announced when we checked on 6 October 2026. A lift ride is therefore added when the lifts are running on your dates, and is not promised in advance. In early December the Gudauri lifts are usually not yet running (last season they opened on 27 December) and snow cover varies from year to year, so early-December trips are for mountain scenery, with snow if it has fallen. May brings more rain to Tbilisi than any other month, and in May Gudauri is between seasons: the lifts do not run (in 2026 they stopped on 19 April and restarted on 18 July) and many hotels and restaurants can be shut. Evenings in the mountains are cold in every season, so please pack a warm layer.

Day by day

Distances are by road. Driving times are planning figures and change with traffic, weather and stops. For each day we say what we do if a road or a site is closed.

Road distances are estimates read from OpenStreetMap road data with two public route planners on 6 October 2026; no stretch has been driven and timed by our team yet. Where a stop says nothing about booking, none is needed.

Our local team meets you at Tbilisi International Airport and drives you to your hotel in your private vehicle, about half an hour away. Georgia keeps the same time as the UAE, so there is no clock change to adjust to. If you land in the morning and your room is not yet ready, we leave your luggage at the hotel and begin with a short walk through Rike Park and across the Bridge of Peace; if you land later in daylight, the walk follows check-in; otherwise the evening is free. Your coordinator hands over the halal restaurant list and the prayer times for your stay.

    Stops

    • Rike Park and Bridge of Peace (optional first walk)

A riverside park and a pedestrian bridge over the Mtkvari river, an easy first walk if you land in daylight.

      Time there
      about 45 minutes

If a road or a site is closed

Morning arrival: we store your luggage at the hotel and start with the Rike Park walk if rooms are not ready; early check-in is requested from the hotel on your behalf and is not confirmed in advance. Late arrival or rain: we go straight to the hotel and move the walk to the morning of Day 2.

Tbilisi: hotel → Rike Park → Narikala ridge → Abanotubani → Juma Mosque → hotel (mostly on foot)

Show the day in fullHide the details

Today is on foot, with short transfers by vehicle. We ride the cable car from Rike Park to the ridge beside Narikala Fortress, walk down to the domed bathhouses of Abanotubani and reach Juma Mosque at the foot of the hill. The walk down from the ridge is steep with steps; anyone who prefers can ride the cable car back down and be driven to the bath quarter. Lunch is at one of the halal restaurants on your list. The afternoon is kept light: the national museum, a shopping mall or a rest at the hotel. If this day falls on a Friday, the morning is shortened so that you are at Juma Mosque in good time for Jumu’ah.

    Stops

    • Rike–Narikala cable car

A short cable car ride from Rike Park over the river to the ridge beside Narikala Fortress.

      Time there
      about 20 minutes including boarding
      Opening and closures
Runs from 10:00 to 24:00, and to 22:00 from 1 November (2025 announcement). Stops for maintenance periods announced by the operator, which have lasted from one day to about three weeks
      Booking
No booking; tickets on the day
    • Narikala Fortress (ridge viewpoint)

Views over the old town and the river from the ridge, then a walk down towards the bath quarter (steep, with steps; the cable car back down is the easier way).

      Time there
      about 45 minutes
      Opening and closures
Restoration works are under way at the fortress; which parts are open is checked before each trip
    • Abanotubani sulphur bath quarter

The brick-domed bathhouses of the old town, seen from outside today; a private room can be booked for Day 4.

      Time there
      about 30 minutes
      Booking
No booking needed for the walk
    • Juma Mosque

The old town mosque on Botanical Street, where Sunni and Shia worshippers pray in the same hall; on a Friday the day is planned around Jumu’ah.

      Time there
about 30 minutes; about 1½ hours on a Friday
      Opening and closures
Friday prayer time changes with the season and is not on the official tourism page; the time and the women’s prayer area are confirmed with the mosque before each trip
    • Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia (optional)

The main building of the Georgian National Museum, an indoor visit of about an hour for the afternoon.

      Time there
      about 1 hour
      Opening and closures
Closed on Mondays and Georgian public holidays. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:30
      Booking
No booking needed; tickets at the door

If a road or a site is closed

Cable car stopped for maintenance: we skip the ridge or drive up as far as vehicles are allowed, and spend the time in the bath quarter and the old town lanes instead. Rain: the museum (not on Mondays or public holidays) or a shopping mall replaces the walk, and the old town walk moves to the free afternoon of Day 4.

Show the day in fullHide the details

This is the long day: we leave at about 08:00 and are back at the hotel at about 19:00 to 19:30, with 6½ to 7 hours of that on the road. We stop at Ananuri Fortress on the Zhinvali reservoir, climb to Gudauri at about 2,200 m, then cross the Jvari (Cross) Pass, which is higher still, to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) and take a local 4x4 up to Gergeti Trinity Church, facing Mount Kazbek. We plan the day so that the pass and the hairpin bends below Gudauri are driven in daylight. Halal options on this road are few, so lunch at Gudauri is reserved in advance (paid on the spot) and we confirm the restaurant with you before departure. If the Gudauri restaurant is closed for the season, we order a packed halal lunch from Tbilisi instead. We found no mosque on this road, so we stop at prayer times and carry prayer mats in the vehicle. From November to mid-April the section beyond Gudauri depends on the pass being open on the day. From November to February the full day to Stepantsminda leaves Tbilisi by 08:00, keeps the Gudauri lunch stop to one hour and starts back from Stepantsminda no later than 14:30; that leaves about an hour and a quarter there, enough for the 4x4 ride up to Gergeti or for the town, not both. From December to March the day is planned as far as Gudauri (244 km, about 5½ hours of driving): if the pass is open, you choose on the day between longer snow time at Gudauri and continuing to Stepantsminda; we do not do both. At about 6½ to 7 hours of driving, this day is longer than the 5 hours we normally plan as a daily ceiling; the December to March version, at about 5½ hours, is also slightly over. We keep it as a day return so that you stay in one hotel for the whole trip and are back in Tbilisi for the evening, close to the halal restaurants and the mosque. If you prefer a shorter day, ask for the version with 3 nights in Tbilisi and 1 night in Gudauri, which spreads the drive over two days.

    Stops

    • Ananuri Fortress

A fortress with towers and churches on the shore of the Zhinvali reservoir; going inside the churches is optional.

      Time there
      about 40 minutes
      Opening and closures
Opening days and hours are not published officially; checked on site before each trip
    • Gudauri

A stop at about 2,200 m for mountain views and lunch; in the snow season, time in the snow.

      Time there
about 1½ hours with lunch; 1 hour from November to February when the day continues to Stepantsminda; 2–3 hours in the December to March version (Gudauri-only version)
      Opening and closures
Lifts run in two seasons set by the operator (2026 summer from 18 July; 2025–26 snow season 27 December to 19 April; 2026–27 dates not yet announced). No lifts from late April to mid-July or from late September to late December, when restaurants and hotels can also be shut
      Booking
Lunch reserved in advance by us and paid on the spot. If the Gudauri restaurant is closed for the season, we order a packed halal lunch from Tbilisi instead (also paid separately); this is confirmed before departure. Lift tickets, when the lifts run, are bought on the day on a physical card
    • Jvari (Cross) Pass and Stepantsminda (Kazbegi)

Over the pass, which is higher than Gudauri, to the small town beneath Mount Kazbek (5,054 m), which you see from a distance.

      Time there
      about 30 minutes in town
      Opening and closures
The Gudauri–Kobi section over the pass can be closed to all vehicles because of avalanche risk (closures on 13 January and 10 February 2026). November to mid-April: reached only if the pass is open on the day
    • Gergeti Trinity Church

A hilltop church above Stepantsminda, at an altitude of about 2,200 m, reached by local 4x4; the visit is for the view, and going inside is optional.

      Time there
about 1–1¼ hours including the 4x4 both ways (about 6 km each way)
      Opening and closures
Opening hours are not published officially. Snow can block vehicle access in winter; 16 July (Gergetoba festival) is crowded
      Booking
Local 4x4 arranged by us on the day

If a road or a site is closed

Pass closed or an avalanche warning in force: the day ends at Gudauri and we return by the same road, without attempting the section beyond. If the road up to Gudauri itself is restricted, or the weather is poor, we swap this day with Day 4; if it cannot run at all, a shorter outing to Ananuri and the Zhinvali reservoir replaces it, with the rest of the day in Tbilisi. Low cloud at Gergeti: we stay in Stepantsminda town and leave out the 4x4 ride. Running late: we turn back at the time set for the day, even if a stop has to be shortened or left out.

A short drive north brings you to Jvari Monastery, a hilltop viewpoint over the meeting of two rivers, and then down to Mtskheta, the old capital, for a walk around Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the lanes beside it. Entering the churches is your choice; the viewpoint and the old town are the visit. You are back in Tbilisi for lunch. The afternoon is free and your vehicle stays with you: we can book a private family room at the sulphur baths, or take the children up to Mtatsminda Park by funicular. If this day is a Friday, we return in time for Jumu’ah at Juma Mosque.

    Stops

    • Mtatsminda Park and funicular (optional, free afternoon)

A hilltop amusement park above the city; both funicular stations have lifts.

      Time there
      2–3 hours
      Opening and closures
Ride hours change with season and weather and are checked before each trip. The park website lists its cable car daily 11:00–22:30 and its food court daily 11:00–23:00

No booking; rides are paid for with a park card on the spot

If a road or a site is closed

Rain: Mtskheta still runs, with less time outdoors. On 14 October and on major Orthodox feast days Mtskheta is very crowded, so we swap this morning with another day. If the park rides are shut because of the weather, a shopping mall replaces Mtatsminda Park.

Depending on your flight, you may have a free morning before your transfer, which we time to your flight. If you leave on a Friday on a flight departing after about 17:00, we can plan Jumu’ah at Juma Mosque before the airport, once the prayer time for that Friday is confirmed with the mosque; with an earlier flight this is not possible. Your driver takes you to Tbilisi International Airport, about half an hour from the centre. Late check-out is requested from the hotel on your behalf and is not confirmed in advance. We reconfirm your flight time with you the day before.

Reference hotels; no contract is in place yet, and the hotel named in your quotation is the one you stay in. Georgia has no compulsory official star rating, so we group hotels in two ways only: hotels that describe themselves as five-star on their own websites, and other hotels whose websites state no star rating. Several large hotels in Tbilisi and Batumi have a casino in the building; if your family prefers a hotel without one, tell us and we confirm this with the hotel before we name it in your quotation.

The rule in full, with its sourcesHide the details

Citizens of the six GCC states (the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman) enter Georgia without a visa and may stay for up to one full year. Residents of other nationalities who hold a valid visa or residence permit of a GCC state may enter without a Georgian visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, provided that the visa or permit is valid on the day they enter Georgia; please carry it with your passport. There is an exception to check for everyone in your party, household staff included: under an amendment adopted on 17 April 2025, citizens of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Uganda and Yemen may use this exemption only if their GCC visa (which must be a multiple-entry visa) or residence permit has at least one year of validity left on the day they enter Georgia; otherwise they need a Georgian visa obtained before travel. The Embassy of Georgia to the UAE also asks that the visa or permit be valid on the day you leave Georgia and that the passport be valid for at least 90 days. When you book, we ask for each traveller’s nationality and the expiry date of any GCC residence permit, so that this can be checked with you before flights are paid for. Travellers who fit none of these cases should check before booking whether they need a visa, through Georgia’s e-visa portal or the nearest Georgian embassy. Since 1 January 2026 every tourist must also carry health and accident insurance with cover of at least GEL 30,000, in English or Georgian (see Insurance). Visa-free entry does not mean automatic admission: the decision at the border rests with the Georgian Border Police. Checked on 6 October 2026 against the pages of the Consular Department of Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and of the Embassy of Georgia to the UAE, and the statement of Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs of 24 April 2025.

Insurance

Read this note in fullHide the details

Since 1 January 2026 every tourist entering Georgia has to hold health and accident insurance: cover of at least GEL 30,000, a policy in English or Georgian, valid for the whole stay including the arrival and departure days, shown on paper or on your phone. A policy issued in Arabic alone does not meet the language rule, so please ask your insurer for an English policy or certificate. Send us a copy before you fly and we check the amount, the dates and the language against the rule. If you would like us to arrange a compliant policy, we add it to your quotation on request.

Flights

Read this note in fullHide the details

The trip starts and ends at Tbilisi International Airport (TBS). As of 6 October 2026, according to the airport’s own airline list and flight board, direct flights to Tbilisi from the Gulf are operated by flydubai from Dubai, Air Arabia from Sharjah, Air Arabia Abu Dhabi from Abu Dhabi, flynas from Riyadh and Jeddah, Qatar Airways from Doha, and Jazeera Airways and Kuwait Airways from Kuwait; Gulf Air links Bahrain and Tbilisi on certain days, and some of its flights make a stop on the way. Some of these routes do not run every day, and we have not found a non-stop flight from Muscat. The flight from the UAE takes roughly 3 to 3½ hours; the airline’s booking page gives the exact time. Schedules change with each airline season (the winter season starts on 25 October 2026, and summer 2027 timetables are published later), so please check the route and the days of operation with the airline before you fix your dates. Batumi has had seasonal direct flights from the Gulf in past summers, but the 2027 schedule is not published, so the trip is planned as Tbilisi in and Tbilisi out. International flights are not part of our land quotation; we plan your airport transfers around the flights you book.

Guide and driver

Read this note in fullHide the details

Your driver is a local professional driver and your guide is a certified local guide. Commentary in Arabic can be arranged, subject to the guide’s availability on your dates; we tell you in writing which language is confirmed before you pay a deposit. If an Arabic-speaking guide is not available, the touring days run with an English-speaking local guide. Your quotation states the days on which the guide is with you. If a member of our Dubai team travels with you, that person coordinates the trip and does not act as the guide.

Halal food and prayer

In Tbilisi there are restaurants listed as halal; in the mountains the choice is very small. We have not found a halal restaurant in Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) that we could verify, so the Day 3 lunch is taken at Gudauri: it is reserved in advance (paid on the spot) and confirmed with you before departure. If the Gudauri restaurant is closed for the season, we order a packed halal lunch from Tbilisi instead. Georgia has no official register of halal certification: the restaurants below are listed as halal by an independent guide or describe themselves as halal, and we tell you which is which. Georgian cooking often uses pork, including in khinkali dumplings, so we ask before ordering. For prayer, Juma Mosque in old Tbilisi holds Friday prayers, and the order of the days is set so that Friday is spent in Tbilisi whenever your flights allow. The women’s prayer area is confirmed with the mosque before departure. We found no mosque in Gudauri or Stepantsminda: on the mountain day we stop at prayer times and carry prayer mats in the vehicle, and your itinerary shows the prayer times for each day.
